At a Glance
Fantasy Flight Games (a division of Asmodee NA) was planning a release of a new trading card game in their Star Wars Unlimited franchise.
They came to us with the goal of producing a tutorial style video that would help teach new players how to play the game.
What They Wanted
They were looking for a production house that had capacity to build a custom studio set, hire national talent, film and edit the video all under one roof.
Their initial ideas for design were broad but had specific constraints due to licensing under the Star Wars namesake.
The Process
We immediately started work on the design of the set. Early reference images and mood boards helped narrow the scope. Then we created a digital version of this set with accurate dimensions, finishes and colors. After several iterations we began construction on this modular set.
Casting was a huge element for this production, as two on-screen hosts would need to carry an energetic read for the almost 15 minute video.
We used an online talent casting platform to review hundreds of diverse applicants and narrow them down to 10 finalists for the client to review. Once the final two were selected, we helped arrange travel and accommodation for their stay in town.
Our Approach
Working within the Star Wars universe requires a surgical level of detail. We balanced the functional needs of a tutorial with the aesthetic expectations of a legendary franchise. From the ‘weathered’ textures on our modular set to the artwork on the walls, every frame was designed to feel like a natural extension of the Star Wars: Unlimited world.
Our team had to become very familiar with the game in order to keep the step-by-step process in order throughout. This meant refining the initial script until it was technically perfect. We also sought to make this long video engaging by featuring several cutaways to card closeups and custom graphics.
Built for Live. Perfected in Post
- Filming this production was similar to livestream coverage with seven different cameras rolling for the entire performance. We relied on teleprompters due to the lengthy script and specific instructions conveyed.
- This was a very complex shoot since we were the operation manual.
Unreal Pre-Vizualization
- We use computer software to build our visual ideas in a 3D space. These images are proportional and accurately reflect what we intend to build.
- This allows us to collaborate closely with out-of-state clients including creative teams who are scattered across the country.
Before & AFter
- We audition lighting, lenses and camera angles with precision and accuracy for early sign-off from the client. These early tests also reveal any visual issues we may encounter with the final edit.
- Seeing the final video so closely resemble the PreVis images is a testament to our due diligence in pre-planning
Attention to Detail
- Much like a home-build, we can preselect finishes and colors ahead of time to give an accurate understanding of the overall look.
- Moodboards really help us refine the design with the client and give us confidence when we start construction of the set
The Final Product
But that's
not all!
Our previous ads with BMC looked good enough that people kept thinking they were made out-of-state!
As a fun add-on, we also created a behind-the-scenes partnership video for the campaign.
This was a great opportunity to pull back the curtain and show the local talent and craftsmanship behind the scenes.
